the kennesaw mountain battle was a decisive union victory during the civil war. this battle was the begining of general w. t. sherman's atlanta champaign and his infamous march to the sea. the kennesaw battle began on june 19 1864 and lasted until july 2 1864. in all 5,350 solders lost their lives in this battle. confederate general joseph johnson defended atlanta's western approach with 63,000 men and 187 cannon. gerneral sherman's army consisted of 100,000 men and 254 cannon. the confederate forces were greatly out numbered and this union victory resulted in the burning of atlanta. today most visitors come to enjoy kennesaw mountain's hiking and jogging trails. since kennesaw mountain is so close to the city of atlanta many locals come here on weekends to get away from the city. of course for those interested in civil war history this is an important civil war battlefield.
