jekyll island is located about 10 miles east of brunswick georgia. in the 1770's general james oglethorpe maintained an out post on the island. in 1794 a french family, the bignon's bought the island. in 1886 the bignon family sold the island to the jekyll island club. the jekyll island club was limited to 100 members which included the most wealthy american businessmen of the time. considered the most exclusive social club in the country, it's membership included the astors, cranes, vanderbilts, pulitzers, morgans, goulds, mccormicks and rockefellers. the members built a large club house, now the jekyll island club hotel, and a number of luxurious "cottages". it was here that in 1910 the concept of the federal reserve was conceived. the federal reserve was founded by six wealthy financiers and a u.s. senator. in 1931 it was estimated that 1/6 of the world's wealth was controlled by the members of the jekyll island club. in 1942 the u.s. government evacuated the island and in 1947 the club sold the island to the state of georgia. today jekyll island is a georgia state park.

in addition to the historic district jekyll island offers ocean front hotels, golf courses, hiking and biking trails and a water park. a very interesting place to visit when in southeast georgia.
