jackson

jackson is a small textile town located in central georgia south of atlanta. jackson is the county seat of butts county georgia. jackson was founded in 1826 and is named after president andrew jackson. in november 1864 union general william t. sherman destroyed the town during his infamous march to the sea. jackson did not recover from this attack until 1882 when a railroad was built through the town. in the 20 th century a number of textile mills where built in the jackson area which had a significant impact on the economy of butts county. today the economy of jackson is based on employment at the georgia state prison nearby.
of interest to the tourist is jackson's downtown historic district and a number of historic homes, buildings and nearby indian springs state park.
