alexander h. stephens (1812-1883) was a famous georgia politician and the vice president of the confederacy during the civil war. prior to the civil war stephens served in the u.s. house of representatives between 1843 and 1859. stephens, a plantation owner was pro slavery and supported states rights. during his tenure in congress he was a vigorous opponent of the wilmont proviso which would have barred the extention of slavery into the territories acquired by the united states during the mexican war. in february 1861 alexander h. stephens was elected vice president of the confederacy. in march 1861 stephens made his famous cornerstone speech in savannah. in this speech he declared that slavery was the natural condition of blacks and slavery was the foundation of the confederacy. during the civil war stephens became a vocal opponent of the policies of president jefferson davis. in february 1865 stephens met with president lincoln at the hampton roads conference to try to bring an end to the civil war. in may 1865 stephens was arrested at his home in crawfordville and was imprisoned at fort warren for five months. when georgia was reamitted to the union stephens was elected to the u. s. house of representatives. in 1882 stephens was elected governor of georgia. alexander h. stephens was a very interesting and controversial figure in american history.
