covington is located 30 miles east of atlanta on I-20. covington is the county seat of newton county georgia. the town was established in 1822 and is named after general leonard covington who was a hero in the war of 1812. the town grew significantly with a railroad connection to atlanta in 1845. in 1864 union general william t. sherman looted covington on his infamous march to the sea but spared the town's homes and buildings. in modern times covington has been the shooting location for several television shows and movies. some examples are the television shows "in the heat of the night" and "the dukes of hazzard". covington was also the location for the films "my cousin vinny", "remember the titans", friday the 13 th park VI", and "holloween II". of interest to the tourist is covington's downtown historic district and the nearby historic town of oxford. for those interested in architecture and southern culture covington is a worth while side trip off of I-20 when traveling between atlanta and augusta.
