cartersville is located northwest of atlanta near I-75. cartersville is the county seat of bartow county. the area around cartersville was originally inhabited by the middle woodlands native american culture dating back to 200 BC. the town was originally named birmingham until 1846 when it was renamed cartersville in honor of col. farish carter. in 1837 the western and atlantic railroad built a depot in cartersville which had a significant economic impact on the area. during the civil war the forces of union general william t. sherman burned cartersville and nearby cassville. cartersville did not recover from this attack until well into the 1880's. today the economy of the area depends on tranportation and tourism. cartersville has much to offer the tourist. cartersville has a very nice downtown historic district, several museums, civil war sites, and the etowah indian mounds. cartersville is a very worth while side trip off of I-75 when in northwest georgia.
