cairo

cairo is located in southwest georgia west of thomasville. cairo is the county seat of grady county georgia. cairo is named after cairo egypt but it's name is pronounced ( kay-row). cairo is nicknamed "the syrup city" but has no relationship with the karo brand of corn syrup. it's nickname comes from sugar cane syrup that was produced here from the early 1890's to the 1990's. roddenberry's is the area's best known brand of cane syrup. the most famous resident of cairo was jackie robinson who was the first black baseball player in major league baseball. there is really not much to do in cairo but for those interested in southern culture it may be worth a stop when traveling through southwest georgia.
