adairsville

originally adairsville was a cherokee native american village. adairsville is named after walter adair who was a cherokee chief. after the cherokees were removed from the area in 1838 the town was developed by william watts. watts owned the western & atlantic railroad and built a depot in adairsville. in the late 1840's sir godfrey barnsley built an estate and gardens near downtown adairsville. adairsville was the site of a civil war battle between the forces of confederate general joseph johnson and union general william t. sherman. adairsville is best known for it's involvement in the great locomotive chase of 1862.
the charming town of adairsville has much to offer the tourist. adairsville has a beautiful downtown historic district, a civil war museum, and world class barnsley gardens golf resort. adairsville is a very worth while side trip off I-75 in northwest georgia.

adairsville is best known for it's involvement in the great locomotive chase of 1862. on april 12 th 1862 james andrews and a group of union solders hijacked the confederate steam engine "the general" in big shanty (modern day kennesaw) georgia. andrew's plan was to damage the western & atlantic railroad and cut confederate communication lines between atlanta and chattanooga. confederate engineer william fuller witnessed the theft and pursued the general by foot and later by handcar. at etowah the steam engine "yonah" joined the chase to the town of kingston. the steam engine "william r. smith" took over the chase at kingston and pursued the general to adairsville. the general passed the south bound engine the "texas" at adairsville depot. the texas picked up eleven confederate solders and joined the chase pursuing the general in reverse. the general was attacked when it stopped at a water station just north of resaca but still continued it's journey to chattanooga. the general passed through dalton and along the way tried to burn several railroad bridges. the general finally ran out of fuel near the ringgold depot and the hijackers escaped into the woods on foot. later andrews and a number of his raiders were captured by a confederate patrol. andrews and seven of his fellow raiders were executed in atlanta. this civil war event was the inspiration for the 1927 silent film "the general" and the 1956 film "the great locomotive chase". the great locomotive chase is one of the most interesting events of the civil war.
