weeki wachee is a tiny town located in hernando county. the town of weeki wachee covers one square mile and has a population of 42 people. weeki wachee is home to weeki wachee springs which is visited by tourists from around the world. weeki wachee springs is one of florida's most famous tourist attractions. the spring has an underwater viewing area where visitors can watch their famous "mermaid" shows. this attraction was created in 1947 by ex-navy frogman newton perry using underwater air hose breathing techniques. this privately owned attraction was bought by the state of florida in 2008 and is now part of florida's state park system. the weeki wachee springs state park is an interesting place to visit when in west central florida.

located a short drive north of weeki wachee are the yulee sugar mill ruins state park, homosassa springs wildlife state park, crystal river preserve state park, and crystal river archaeological state park. you can visit all of these parks in a day or two depending how long you stay at each park. weeki wachee, homosassa, and crystal river are very interesting places to visit in west central florida.
