wauchula

wauchula is the county seat of hardee county florida. wauchula was founded on the site of fort hartsuff, a fort constructed during the second seminole war. the town was developed in 1886 with the arrival of the florida southern railway. the railroad company named the town wauchula after the miccosoukee word wa-tu-la-ha-kee which means "the call of the sand hill crane". wauchula's motto is "the cucumber capital of the world" but in recent decades citrus has become the area's most important crop. the most significant event in wauchula's history was hurricane charlie in 2004. 85 % of wauchula's homes and buildings were damaged or destroyed by the hurricane. of interest to the tourist is nearby paynes creek state park and the town's historic district.
