stuart is located on the treasure coast in southeast florida. stuart is the county seat of martin county florida. the area around stuart was first settled in 1870. between 1893 and 1895 the settlement was named potsdam after potsdam germany. in 1895 the settlement was renamed stuart in honor of homer stuart jr. the town of stuart was incorporated in 1914 and became the county seat of martin county in 1925. for most of the 20 th century stuart was a small fishing village. in the early 1960's ralph evinrude, the president of evinrude motors and his actress wife francis langford opened the outrigger resort in stuart. the outrigger attracted many famous hollywood stars to stuart. in the late 1960's my father and i fished from the outrigger frequently and i had the opportunity to meet francis langford. today the site of the outrigger is a condo complex and all that remains of the resort is dolphin bar and shrimp house restaurant. stuart is nicknamed the "sailfish capital of the world" due to it's excellent off shore fishing. of interest to the tourist is stuart's downtown historic district, beautiful jensen beach, and of course it's excellent off shore fishing.
