saint petersburg and the beaches saint petersburg is a city located on the pinellas peninsula in southwest florida. the town of saint petersburg was founded by john c. willaims and peter demens in 1876. the town was named after saint petersburg russia which was demens' birth place. the town began to grow with the introduction of a railroad in 1888. by the turn of the 20th century saint petersburg became an important gulf coast port. in 1914 a airplane service was established between saint petersburg and tampa which was the first commercial air service in america. with the advent of air conditioning saint petersburg became a popular retirement town in the 1940's and 1950's. saint petersburg has experienced rapid growth since the 1970's and now is a large florida city.
saint petersburg has much to offer the tourist. saint petersburg is best known for it's numerous gulf coast beaches. saint perterburg also has a vibrant downtown and is home to a number of excellent museums. a very nice place to visit in southwest florida. |
