palatka is a small town located on the st. johns river south of jacksonville and west of saint augustine florida. palatka is the county seat of putnam county florida. the original inhabitants of the palatka area were the timucuan native american tribe. they were replaced by the seminoles who called the area pilo-taikita, (crossing over). in 1767 denys rolle established rolletown and a plantation in present day east palatka. in 1783 he moved his live stock and slaves to exuma island in the bahamas. during the second seminole war fort shannon was built in present day downtown palatka in 1835. palatka was incorporated in 1853 and was a popular winter tourist attraction until the out break of the civil war. in 1862 the USS cimarron shelled downtown palatka and union troops occupied the town. most of the residents of palatka fled the town and did not return until the end of the war. after the civil war palatka's winter visitors returned to the area and it was a thriving tourist town up to the turn of the 20 th century. today much of palatka's economy is still dependant on winter tourists.

palatka has much to offer the tourist interested in architecture, florida history and southern culture. palatka's historic districts has scores of architecturally significant buildings and homes. palatka is also home to beautiful ravine gardens state park. palatka is a very worth while side trip when visiting the saint augustine area of northeast florida.
