ormond beach

the ormond beach area was originally inhabited by the timucaun native american tribe. the town of ormond beach is named after james ormond who had a sugar cane plantation in the area in the early 1800's. in 1886 the st. johns & halifax railroad was built through ormond beach which opened up the area to tourism. the ormond hotel was built in 1887 which was one of a number of winter tourist hotels built along the florida atlantic coast in the late 1880's. of interest to the tourist is it's beautiful atlantic beach, tomoka state park, and scores of historic homes and buildings. ormond beach has a much more laid back atmosphere than it's more famous neighbor daytona beach.
