the town of marathon is located on vaca key in the middle keys. the name of the town dates back to the construction of the overseas railroad. construction workers worked day and night on the railroad bridges and complained that the project was becoming a "marathon". marathon is best known for it's off shore and back country salt water fishing. depending on the time of the year off shore you can catch marlin, saifish, dolphin, tuna, and sharks. the reef is just 5 miles off shore offers excellent yellow tail snapper and grouper fishing. the florida bay side of marathon has excellent tarpon, permit, and bonefish fishing. for those interested in scuba diving and snorkeling sombrero reef is an excellent diving spot. marathon is not as upscale as nearby islamorada and is less expensive. marathon has much to offer the tourist. marathon has a number of moderately priced hotels and restaurants, a beautiful beach, a small state park, and the crane point museum. for tourists on a budget marathon is a very good value in the middle keys.
