fort lauderdale is named after three forts that were built in the area during the second seminole war. fort lauderdale was incorporated in 1911 and became the county seat of broward county in 1915. the fort lauderdale area was sparsely populated until the florida land boom of the 1920's. it was during this time that fort lauderdale's system of canals were developed. during WWII there was a navy base established in fort lauderdale. after WWII fort lauderdale's population grew and it became a popular tourist destination. in 1960 the movie "where the boys are" was filmed in fort lauderdale and it became a popular spring break destination in the 1960's and 1970's. since then the officials of fort lauderdale have discouraged spring breakers and they have moved on to daytona and panama city beaches. fort lauderdale offers a beautiful beach and many yachting and off shore fishing opportunities. over 10 million tourists visit fort lauderdale each year. |
