eustis is a town located near the intersection of SR 19 and US 441 in lake county florida. the town was originally called highlands then was renamed lake eustis after general abraham eustis. general eustis gained prominence in the seminole wars. the forces of general eustis had skirmishes with the seminoles on the south shore of lake eustis near present day tavares. prior to the arrival of a railroad eustis was a busy port town for steamships plying lakes dora, eustis, griffin, and harris. the u. s. opened up the area for homesteading in the 1850's but the settlements were delayed due to the civil war. surveying was finally completed in 1875. eustis was an important citrus market town until the great freeze of 1894-1895. in the early 1900's eustis became a popular winter vacation destination because of it's climate and numerous area lakes which offer excellent fresh water fishing. today many of eustis' residents are northern retirees. eustis' most famous resident was edgar james banks, an antquarian and novelist who was the inspiration for the character "indiana jones".
of interest to the tourist is eustis' downtown historic district with numerous shops, restaurants and bars and area lakes that offer excellent freshwater fishing.

eustis resident dr. edgar james banks was a american diplomat, antiquarian, professor, and novelist. banks was a roving archaeologist during the final days of the ottoman empire. banks was the american consul to baghdad in 1898. banks bought hundreds of cuneiform tablets in the closing days of the ottoman empire and sold them to museums, libraries, and universities all over the u. s. in 1909 banks became a professor of oriental languages at the university of toledo. after WW1 banks travelled and lectured all over the country. in 1921 he retired in eustis.
