captiva island is located just north of sanibel island near the city of fort myers florida. captiva was once part of sanibel island but a hurricane created blind pass which separates the two islands. the name captiva comes from a legend that the pirate jose gaspar (gasparillia) held female prisoners here for ransom or for personal pleasure. today captiva is a upscale resort island with a couple of high end resort hotels and several good restaurants. a very nice place to visit when in southwest florida.
