big pine key is a large key at the beginning of the upper keys section of the florida keys. of interest to the tourist is the key deer national wildlife refuge and looe key off shore. most of big pine key is part of the wildlife refuge and driving around big pine key you will most likely see the endangered key deer. located in the refuge is the blue hole. the blue hole is an old rock quarry where you can see alligators, green iguanas, and many species of birds. looe key is actually a reef about six miles off shore. looe key was named after the HMS looe which ran a ground on the reef in 1744. looe key is a national marine sanctuary and is a excellent place to scuba dive or snorkel in the upper keys. for those interested in fishing, diving, and nature big pine key is a nice place to visit.
