marion

marion is a small town located on CR 183 about twenty miles northwest of selma alabama. marion is the county seat of perry county alabama. marion was originally called muckle ridge and was renamed marion after revolutionary war hero francis marion. this historic town is home to the marion military institute and judson college. howard college was founded in marion but was moved to birminghan in 1887. today howard college is known as samford university located in homewood alabama. marion was not directly involved in the civil war but marion resident nicola marschall designed the "stars and bars" confederate flag and the grey confederate uniform. in modern times marion is best known for it's involvement in the 1960's civil rights movement. the civil rights activist martin luther king married marion resident coretta scott in marion in 1953. during a civil rights protest in 1965 jimmie lee jackson was shot and killed by an alabama state trooper. jackson's death was the catalyst for the organization of the famous selma to montgomery protest march. of interest to the tourist are marion's historic homes, buildings, and the nearby talladega national forest. marion has ten structures that are listed on the national register of historic places. for those interested in history and architecture marion is an interesting "off the beaten path" place to visit.
