lowndesboro is located on CR 29 a mile north of US 80 between montgomery and selma. the town was originally called mc gill's hill and was settled by planters from south carolina and virginia in the 1820's. lowndesboro was incorporated in 1832 and was named after william lowndes. three historic events occured in and near lowndesboro, the battle of holy ground in 1813, the battle of lowndesboro in 1865, and the murder of viola liuzzo in 1965. of interest to the tourist is lowndesboro's collection of historic homes and historic sites. lowndesboro is a interesting "off the beaten path" place to visit in central alabama.

the battle of lowndesboro was fought on april 10 th 1865 in downtown lowndesboro. this small battle was between the forces of general nathan bedford forrest and general james h. wilsons's raiders. in may of each year the town of lowndesboro has a reinactment of this battle.
