gadsden

gadsden is located on the coosa river in northeast alabama. gadsden is the county seat of etowah county alabama. gadsden was originally called double springs when john riley settled the area in 1825. double springs became a stage coach stop on the huntsville-rome route. in 1845 the town was renamed gadsden after colonel james gadsden of south carolina. in the late 1800's gadsden was untouched by the civil war and was a center of trade on the coosa river. in the 20 th century gadsden became an industrial town until the 1980's. today gadsden's economy is based on transportation. of interest to the tourist is gadsden's broad street historic district, noccalulla falls, and near by lookout mountain.

on may 2 nd 1863 at cedar bluff alabama just northeast of gadsden confederate general nathan bedford forrest captured the forces of union colonel abel streight in one of the most interesting and humorous events in the civil war. forrest's troops were greatly outnumbered by streight's and a union victory was almost assured. during the battle streight sought a truce with forrest. during the negotiations forrest had his troops march in a circuitous route pass the site of the talks. thinking himself greatly outnumbered by the confederates streight surrendered to forrest on the spot. streight spent most of the remainder of the war at libby prison in richmond.

And right around this NE region there are over 14,000 limestone caves; many hard to get into and need to be an expert. I may search to find out what is for tourists.
