demopolis is a small town located at the confluence of the black warrior and tombigbee rivers in southwest alabama. the area around present day demopolis was colonized by a group of french expatriates in 1817. the colony tried to grow grapes and olives but the colony failed. in 1819 the french colony dissolved and american settlers developed demopolis as a port town. a number of cotton plantations were established in the 1820's and demopolis became a prosperous cotton market town. during the civil war demopolis became a confederate hospital town and was subjected to a huge number of war refugees. after the fall of nearby selma in april 1865 demopolis was occupied by the union. like most alabama towns the economy of demopolis suffered during the era of radical reconstruction and did not recover well into the 20 th century. today demopolis' economy is based on beef production, catfish aquaculture, lumber, and paper manufacturing.
of interest to the tourist is demopolis' downtown historic district which has a nice collection of antebellum homes. in and near demopolis are several antebellum plantations which are open to the public. for those interested in southern history and culture demopolis is well worth a visit in southwest alabama.
