the town of cullman is located in north central alabama 50 miles north of birmingham on I-65. cullmann is the county seat of cullman county alabama. the area around cullman was originally inhabited by the cherokee native american tribe. during the civil war cullman was the site of the battle of day's gap in april 1863. at cedar bluff alabama in cullman county confederate general nathan bedford forrest captured the forces of union colonel abel streight in one of the most interesting and humorous events of the war. forrest's troops were greatly outnumbered by streight's and a union victory was almost assured. during the battle streight sought a truce with forrest. during the negotiations forrest had his troops march in a circuitous route past the site of the talks. thinking himself outnumbered by the confederates streight surrendered to forrest on the spot. streight spent most of the remainder of the war at libby prison camp in richmond . johann g. cullmann founded the town in 1878. cullmann came to the united states in 1848 due to unrest in germany at the time. cullmann encouraged germans to immigrate to alabama and in the late 1800's cullman had a large german population. today cullman celebrates it's german roots with an annual oktoberfest. of interested to the tourist is cullman's downtown historic district and world famous st. bernard abbey and ave maria grotto nearby.
