one of the largest art museums in the world the hermitage is a must see site in st. petersburg.
the museum complex includes the large and small hermitage and the winter palace. the baroque architecture and decor of the hermitage and winter palace in my opinion rivals the collections it contains. pictured is the hermitage with the russian flag at half mast. this picture was taken on june 21st, the anniversary of the german invasion of the soviet union in 1941. this commemorates the death of 30 million russians in WWII.

pictured is the raphael loggia in the hermitage. catherine the great was so impressed by the raphael stanze in the vatican she had copies of his paintings made for this hall.

built in 1818 the dome of st. isaac's cathedral dominates the skyline of st. petersburg. the cathedral contains a wonderful collection of icons.

built in 1883 by tsar alexander III on the site of the assassination of his predecessor tsar alexander II. this church is an excellent example of russian revival style of architecture. inside there is a beautiful collection of mosaic icons.

this baroque cathedral was built in 1762 for sailors and admiralty employees. it was named after st. nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. inside the cathedral is a collection of icons by fedot and menas kolokolnikov.

at 9:40 pm october 25th 1917 this ship fired a blank shot to signal the storming of the winter palace by the bolsheviks. this shot "heard around the world" was the begining of the communist revolution.

once known as the kirov theatre in soviet times, the mariinskiy theatre was built in 1860. this neo-renaissance building was designed by albert kavos who was also the architect of the bolshoy theatre in moscow. the mariinsky is best known for ballet, it is also st. petersburg's opera house.

this massive brick building was built in 1860 as part of the fortifications of the peter and paul fortress. it now houses the artillery museum which has on display arms and artillery from medieval times to WWII. it also has an interesting collection of military vehicles and tanks from WWII.
