main train station - Prague

main train station

new town (nove mesto) Nove Mesto - New Town Review

now our virtual tour moves on to the new town area of central prague. this first stop is the main train station (hlavni nadrazi). the part of the station were you arrive and depart the trains is some what dingy and because of seedy charcters that roam the station it is a place you do not want to hang around. but the upper level of the station on wilsonova street is an interesting place to visit. the main hall of the upper station is preserved as it was in the turn of the 20th century. you can see the old ticket windows and there is a cafe on this floor. the upper level of the station is very different than the lower level. worth a look when at the station.

president's office - Prague

president's office

second courtyard Castle Review

once you have passed through matthais gate you are in the second courtyard. the large building straight ahead is the president of the czech republic's office. to the left of the picture is the gallery of prague castle. this was once the castle stables and now has a collection of reniassance and baroque paintings. next to the picture gallery is where you can buy tickets to the parts of the castle that require admission. you can wander around much of the castle for free but you need tickets for the golden lane, the royal palace, st. george's convent, and st. vitus's cathedral. the building to the right is the church of the holy rod.

petrin funicular

the funicular Petrin Review

just down karmlitska street from the communism statue is ujezd square and the funicular station. the funicular was originally built in 1891 to take people to the 1891 jubilee exhibition. it was closed between 1965 and 1985 due to a partial collapse of petrin hill. today the funicular has modern cars and station. you can also walk up petrin hill and it's beautiful park but it is quite a hike.
