mauthausen concentration camp

mauthausen is a small village located about 15 miles south of linz on the danube river. this village become world famous for the concentration camp built by the nazis. mauthausen KL is located about 4 miles south of the village on the east side of the danube. just after the german-austrian union in 1938 mauthausen concentration camp was constructed to house austrian political prisoners, jehovas withnesses, homosexuals, gypsies, communists, and jews. later after the invasion of the soviet union many russian prisoners of war where interned there as well as a large number of poles and hungarian jews. by the end of WWII there were inmates from all over europe interned there. mauthausen was considered a "death camp" with a gas chamber and cematorium. it is estimated that over 100,000 people died here. mauthausen is a disturbing but historically important place to visit.
