salzburg is located on the salzach river in northwest austria. the salzburg area was a celtic settlement around 15 BC. later it was a roman town named juvavum in 45 AD. the roman town was destroyed in the late 7th century after the fall of the nomcan boarder. saint rupert founded a new town in 700 AD and named it salzburg (salt castle). on a hill over looking the town the festung (fortress) hohensalzburg was built in 1077. in the late 14 th century salzburg gained independence from bavaria and became the seat of the archbishipric of the roman holy empire. during the 18 th and 19 th centuries salzburg was part of the holy roman empire and later part of the austrian empire. the austrian house of habsburg fell after their defeat in WW I and in 1919 salzburg became part of the first austrian republic. between 1938 and 1945 salzburg was part of the german third reich. austria was liberated by american troops in 1945 and after a brief occupation salzburg and austria regained it's independence. today salzburg is best known as the birth place of classical composer wolfgang amadeus mozart and as the location of the 1965 film "the sound of music".

of interest to the tourist is mozart's house, festung hohensalzburg, it's baroque alt stadt, and the nearby austrian alps. salzburg is a very nice town to visit when in austria.

    I loved Salzburg, even though the weather was horrible during my visit. Definitely a place I must return to.
