stonehenge is a fascinating archeological site on the salisbury plain eight miles north of salisbury england. this site began as an earthen circle around 3100BC. archeologists believe that stonehenge was built in three phases. the first phase was an earthen circle with wooden posts. between 2950 and 2900BC sandstone rocks were added to the site. these stones are believed to have come from marlborough downs twenty five miles north of the site. in the third phase the massive bluestones were added some time between 2250 and 1600BC. these stones are believed to come from pembrokeshire in wales. some of these stones weigh up to fourty five tons. |
| | it is not known for sure who built this massive structure or what was it's purpose. some believe it is an astronomical calender or a pagan religious site. later in history this site was used by celtic priests called the druids. today modern "druids" celebrate the summer solstice here every year. stonehenge is a marvel of the prehistoric world and is very much worth visiting when in the salisbury area. |
