tintern abbey

tintern abbey was founded by walter de clare, the lord of chepstow in 1131AD. tintern abbey is the second cistercian abbey in great britian and the first in wales. it is one of the most spectacular ruins in britian. the abbey inspired william wordsworth to write his famous poem "tintern abbey". king henry VIII ended traditional monastic life by abolishing the catholic church in great britian. the abbey was granted to the earl of worcester who sold the lead from it's roof thus begining the decay of the abbey. tintern abbey is a beautiful place to visit in the wye valley in wales.

I am so glad you found one of my favourite Cistercian Abbeys. It is just up the road from where I live and your Tip reminds me how much we underrate those things on our doorstep. Thanks for reminding me!
