clonmacnoise was founded by st. ciaran around 545AD. this monastery thrived from the 7th to the 12th centuries. it was plundered both by the vikings and the anglo-normans. clonmacnoise is at the junction of several medieval trade routes which linked it to all parts of ireland. in the middle ages it was a center of scholarship and piety. many kings of tara and connaught are buried here. in 1979 pope john paul II conducted mass here.
