the town of cashel in county tipperary is home to the famous rock of cashel. once the seat of the kings of munster the rock of cashel was originally a fortress. it's origins as a center of power go back to the 5th century AD. conall corc is believed to be the founder of the cashel kingship. according to legend st. patrick is said to have baptised the grandsons of conall corc.
in 1101, muircheatach ua briain. the king of cashel, gave the fortress to the church. a cathedral was built on the rock sometime between 1101 and 1111. the cathedral you see today was built in the 13th century.
the rock of cashel was attacked by cromwell in 1647 and 3.000 of its occupants were killed. the rock of cashel continued to be used by the church of ireland up to 1749.
the rock of cashel is a very important historical site in ireland and is well worth a visit when in south central ireland. |
