kilkenny castle is the top tourist attaction in kilkenny. built in the 1190's. the powerful butler family lived in the castle from the 14th century until 1935. the achitecture of the castle is medieval but over the years the butlers made some gothic revival changes. the castle is open to the public and has interesting rooms and a fine art collection.

the rothe house was built in 1594 by the wealthy merchant john rothe. the rothe house is a combination of three elizabethan cut stone buildings divided by cobbled courtyards. the rothe house is only elizabethan merchants house in existence in ireland. today it is home to the kilkenny archaeological society and has a museum of period costumes and furniture.

pictured is the tomb of the butler earl james, aka james the lame. in the 16th century james traveled to london where he and 35 of his servants were poisoned. his body was buried in england but his heart was returned to ireland and lies under this effigy.

st. canice's cathedral St Canice Cathedral Review

pictured is the round tower of st. canice's cathedral. this tower dates back to 800AD. this tower collapsed during the trial of dame alice kytelerin 1332. the tower fell and demolished the choir and side chapels. it was rebult later in the 14th century. st. canice's cathedral is a very interesting place to visit when in kilkenny.

the shee alms house on rose inn street was built by sir richard shee in 1582 to help kilkenny's poor. today it houses kilkenny's tourist information office. a good spot to begin a tour of kilkenny.

kilkenny is famous for it's over 80 pubs in the town limits. people from as far away as dublin come to kilkenny on weekends to take in kilkenny's pubs and bars. pictured is kilkenny's most famous pub, kyteler's inn. kyteler's was founded in 1324 by dame alice le kyteler. kyteler was born in kilkenny in 1263 and was married four times. through these marriages she acqured a considerable fortune. because of her immense wealth her enemies conspired to accuse her of witchcraft and she was burned at the stake. located in the center of kilkenny kytelers is a great place to begin a pub crawl.
