the area around slane is a very historical part of ireland. it is home to the hill of slane and mellifont abbey. nearby is where the battle of boyne was fought in 1690. in 1688 the catholic king james of england was desposed from the throne and was replaced by his protestant daughter mary and her husband william of orange. king james sought the support of irish catholics and challenged william the orange at old bridge on the river boyne. william of orange and the protestants triumphed thus establishing protestant rule over most of ireland for the next 300 years,
