located near the village of l'escala is the ruins of the greco-roman town of empuries. this seaside town was founded by the greeks in 600BC. originally empuries was built on a small island and in 550BC the town was moved to the mainland . the name empuries is greek for trading place. in 218BC the romans built a city next to the greek village. eumpuries occupies a beautiful location on the costa brava. a must see site for visitors to catalonia who have an interest in roman history.
