augusta treverorum

trier is the oldest city in germany and is known for it's impressive roman buildings and ruins. the town of augusta treverorum was established in the 1st century BC. augusta treverorum was the capital of the roman province of gallia belgica and later became the capital of the western roman empire. emperor constantine moved to trier in 306AD and made major improvements to the city. the franks occupied trier in 459 and in 870 it became part of eastern francia. in medieval times the archbishoric of trier was one of the electors of the holy roman empire. in the 17th and 18th centuries trier was invaded several times and france finally took possession of the city in 1794. after the napoleonic wars trier was ceded to the kingdom of prussia. in 1871 trier became part of the german empire.

for those interested in roman history and architecture trier is a must see place to visit when in germany. trier also has several excellent museums that cover roman trier.

 I missed many things during my short and unplanned visit in Trier, Doug, but had a nice dinner at the Domstein too! It is always a pleasure to visit history laden cities.
