what to see in central copenhagen

radhus
downtown copenhagen can be seen in a day or two. starting from the central train station (1) tivoli gardens is across the street. around the corner from tivoli is the (2) radhus, city hall, you can walk down frederiksberggage, a pedestrian street through the center of the city. you will pass (3) helligandskirken(15th century), continue on to kongens nytorv (square) you will see (4) det kongelige teater (theatre) and the (5) hotel d' angleterre. to the left of this square you can go to the (6) rundtarn (observatory) built in 1642. also near by is (7) rosenborg slot (palace) built in 1606. from the opposite direction from kongens nytorv is the (8) nyhaven canal. a great place to have lunch or enjoy a danish beer. just north of nyhaven is (9) amalienborg slot (palace), the official residence of queen margrethe II. the palace was built in 1748. near by is the (10) marmorkirken, (marble church). it's dome is one of the largest in europe. continue north to the (11) kastellet (fort) built in 1626. on the water side of the fort is the famous (12) little mermaid. of course there are many other sites in copenhagen but the ones listed can be seen in a day.

amalieborg slot

amalieborg slot

amalieborg slot (palace), the official residence of queen margrethe II. at noon each day there is the changing of the guard. king frederik V built this palace in 1748 to comemorate the 300th anniversary of the oldenburg dynasty. the palace complex consists of four identical buildings around a square just north of the nyhaven canal. this palace has been the main residence of the danish royal family since 1794.
marmokirken

marorkirken

the marorkirken (marble church) is located a block south of the amalieborg slot. the dome of the church is one of the largest in europe. it's design was based on the dome of the basilica of st. peter's in rome. construction of the church started in 1749 but due to cost overuns work on the church was abandoned in 1770. the church was finally completed 100 years later.

Hi Doug, I'm glad you enjoyed your visit to Copenhagen. I was there in June and had a great time cycling all around, also went to two operas and a concert in the new concert house.

Very useful info. I didn't realize Copenhagen was so small and easy to see in a short period of time.
