Palazzo Ducale: the doge's palace

  • located next to the piazza san marco, the dodge's palace is one of the most famous sites in venice. this is the home and offices of the doges of venice. the venetian republic began in the 9th century AD and lasted almost a thousand years until 1797. there where 76 doges of venice. there is a lot to see in this opulent building, some examples, the porta della carta, (pictured), sala del maggior consiglio, (great council hall), sala dello scudo, (map room), and the court of the room of the cord, (torture chamber).

  • this is the bridge that connects venice's prison to the court rooms in the doge's palace. this bridge was so named because prisoners would "sigh" when they crossed the bridge on their way to the torture chamber. worth booking is the "secret itineraries" tour. it must be booked in advance at the palace or by phone 041 522 49 51

  • the columns of st. mark and st. theodore were brought to venice after the sack of constantinople. the columns were placed on the piazzetta in 1172. the western column is crowned by a statue of st. theodore and the eastern column has a bronze statue of the lion of st. mark. between these columns was the site of public executions of criminals.

  • the basilica san marco is one of the most beautiful in italy. originally built in the 9th century AD to enshrine the body of st. mark. over the entrance to the cathedral are the four horses of st. mark. these are replicas and the originals are on display inside of the cathedral. some examples of the magnificent works of art in the cathedral are, the ascension dome, the pala d' oro, the atrium mosaics, the icon of the nicopeia madonna, and the beautiful marble pavement of the cathedral.

  • harry's bar is located a block away from the piazza san marco. it was founded by giuseppe cipriani in 1931. many famous people have stopped by here for a bellini cocktail. just be fore warned, a bellini will set you back 14 euro !

  • the arenale is venice's medieval shipyard. during the crusades 30,000 people worked in the arenale and using a production line process built a warship a day. in 1204 AD a fleet of venecian warships laid seige to constantinople. the venecians were victorious and sacked the city. this defeat much weakened byzantium and later it was over run by the turks. venice's greatest naval victory was the battle of lepanto in 1571. this defeat of the moslems inspired venice's bakers to invent the crecent shaped croissant.

  • the ghetto was established in 1516 to segregate venice's jews from the rest of the population. they were only allowed to leave the ghetto during the day and had to wear identifying badges and hats. venice's ghetto was the first in the world. you can visit the museo ebraico which conducts guided tours of the ghetto.

  • the grand canal is lined with beautiful palazzos, the ca' d' oro is one of the most famous. built in 1420 by marino contarini it was the most magnificent in the city. the ca' d' oro is open to the public and houses a nice art museum.

  • the accademia art museum houses the largest collection of venetian art in the world. the accademia was founded as the accademia di belle art by giovanni battista in 1750. in 1807 napoleon had many works of art removed from churches and transfered them to the accademia. some examples of the collection, tintoretto.s "the stealing of st. mark", carpaccio's "cycle of st. ursula", lorenzio lotto's "portrait of a gentleman", and carpaccio's "healing of the madman".
    a must see site for the lover of fine art.

  • torcello is one of venice's lagoon islands. venice was founded in the 6th century AD by refugees fleeing the advance of attila the hun's army. at one time the small island of torcello had 20,000 inhabitants. today the number of people living on the island is around 60 people. on the island is the byzantine cathedral of santa fosca. this church was built between the 11th and 12th centuries and is an interesting place to visit. there is a marble seat just outside of the cathedral, it is said that it was attila the hun's throne. other lagoon islands worth visiting are the lido, burano, and murano.
