verona is an interesting city to visit when in the veneto area of italy. in the center of verona is best preserved roman arena in italy. built in the first century and it is still used as an entertainment venue today. however, the most interesting sites in verona are the works of the scaligeri family. the scaligeri came to power in 1263 and ruled verona for 124 years. they built the castelvecchio in 1355 which now houses a fine art gallery. another site worth seeing is the ponte scaligero crossing the alige river. the tombs of the scaligeri are interesting in that they are not in a church but outside. also a site worth seeing is the casa di giulietta. the balcony of this house was shakespere's inspiration for the play romeo and juliet. the original story was written by luigi da porto in the 1520's but in reality the balcony that is visited by millions of tourists was part of a restored 13th century inn. |
