  • after napoleon's victory in the battle of austerlitz in 1805 he commissioned the arc de triomphe to commemorate that event. the arch was not completed until 1836. the tomb of the french unknown soldier from WWI is buried under the arch. the arch has several interesting reliefs, "the battle of aboukir", "the triumph of napoleon", "departure of the volunteers", "general marceau's funeral" and "the battle of austerlitz". a viewing area on the top of the arch is open 10:00AM to 10:30PM.

  • the louvre is one of the best art museums in the world. the museum's most famous painting is di vinci's "mona lisa", but this just only one of thousands of the finest works of western civilization. it ranks with the likes of metropolitan in new york, the hermitage in st. petersburg, the uffizi in florence, the national gallery in london, the riksmuseum in amsterdam, the vatican collections in rome, the kunsthistorisches in vienna, and the prado in madrid. this is a must see site for anyone who loves fine art. i recommend a full day to see all of the collection. closed on tuesdays

  • pictured is the tour eiffel from the the place du trocadero. the tower was built by gustave eiffel in 1889. originally it was to be a temporary structure as part of the universal exhibition of 1889. it was the world's tallest structure until the completion of the empire state building in 1931. there are elevators to the top but the lines are usually quite long.

  • the conciergerie located on the ile de la cite is an interesting historical building. originally part of the old capetain palace the conciergerie was the paris' home to the knights templar in the middle ages. during the french revolution the conciergerie served as a prison for royals awaiting their turn at the guilotine. marie antoinette was interned here as well as charlotte corday who murdered marat in his bath. ironically, revolutionary leaders danton and robespierre were also interned here.

  • this imposing basilica was built in response to the franco-prussian war of 1870. located on the montmartre it offers a superb view of the city. work on the basilica began in 1875 and it was completed in 1914. ironically it was not consecrated until 1919 due to the german invasion of WWI. some important works of art in the basilica are "the great mosaic of christ", "the virgin mary and child", and "the statue of christ" above the main entrance. to visit the basilica take the metro to the abbesses station then take the funiculaire to the steps of sacre-coeur. when visiting the basilica the montmarte area is worth exploring on foot.
