Nature is wonderful, but there is nothing like great urban spaces.

Santa Claus Parade down University Avenue

Great Place to Live, but...

I love Toronto. It is a really fine livable city on many levels. Lots of nice neighbourhoods, fantastic ethnic mix, handsome housing style, lush trees abound, etc. Even Jane Jacobs moved here. However, sadly I don't see it as a great tourist city. Unless you come for some specific events or festivals, it is rather pedestrian. Maybe it's part of living too long in a place, but I would be hard pressed to provide an itinerary of more than a day or two for an out of towner.
Psuedo Mardi Gras at the Ex

The "EX"

Okay, there is one annual event that I simply love in Toronto. I love it so much that I have attended every single year of my life...even during the 15 years I spent abroad. Now, if you ask most sophisticated Torontonians, they will probably be repulsed by it. But to my mind, there is something unique in the Canadian National Exhibition that appears at the end of every summer down by the lakefront.

What do I love about it? I'm not sure if it is the honky tonk atmosphere, the screams of the dated midway, the smells of the sugar waffles, the tackiness of the exhibits, the cross-section of fare-goers, stupid pet tricks, even dumber human tricks, the poor man's American Idol contests, or on and on it goes....

Pros:"trees, neighbourhoods, streetcars, The Ex, transit, ethnic,"
Cons:"pathetic lakefront, lost history, lack of vision"
In A Nutshell:"A great place to live, but I wouldn't rush to visit."
