Lakewood Travel Guide: 2 reviews and 4 photos

General Info

Lakewood is pretty new city, it celebrated its 50 years in 2005, it has a population of about 80000 and it is located in Los Angeles county, California and about 40 minutes south of Los Angeles (depending the traffic!!!)

Lakewood is mainlyof the people living here are professionals that own their own houses. You will not see tall buildings, just houses that are very well taken care of.

Very few businesses are found here, we can say that the heart of the city is the mall area. Where you can find all kind of departments stores, smaller businesses, movie theaters, maaaaaaany restaurants, the city hall, sheriff station among others.

We are very proud of our city, it is well kept, we have many parks where all kind of activities are held all year long. But most important, Lakewood is a veeeeeeeeeery safe city, with almost no crime, being a sheriff here is really boring..jajajaj!!!

Hope you get the chance to visit it some day.

How to get here?

Well, it depends. if you live in the US the best way is either via freeway or flying to Long Beach airport, forget LAX, it is to crowded!!! The Long Beach is a closer, smaller, faster...efficient!!! but only handles domestic flyes!!! So if you are coming from abroad, sorry, gotta fly to LAX .
The Port of San Pedro is really close so if you have the time you can get here in a cruise ship.

What to do?

In Lakewood itself there is no much to do, just the traditional trips to the mall, out for dinner or a movie and the country club ,BUT we are surrounded by the best of Southern California.
Let' s see.

To the north of Lakewood
Los Angeles is just 30 minutes away, there you can go to downtown and take a good look of the buildings, visit the new Disney Art Center or go to the Ahmanson theater and enjoy a concert, the opera, a play...etc There are also several museums, the LA Zoo, the science center (a great place for kids) the Griffith Observatory and if you like sports the Dodgers Stadium and the Stapple center is a must.

Lakewood is also close to Hollywood, so if you movies are your thing you have to take the time to go to Universal Studios and Universal City walk (do not forget to take the backlot tour and have dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe), go to Downtown Hollywood and check the stars walk of fame and Chinese Mann theather. If you like Museums visit the Hollywood Museum across from the Kodak theater, the Movie Wax museum and if you wish, the Erotic museum too. Do not forget to find out which is the latest musical or play playing at the PAntages theater.
Also you have to go to the Paul Getty Museum, just make sure you give them a call and see how busy they are, there are times during the year when visits are by appoinment only.

If you are a little more relaxed and may be somewhat wild go to Venice Beach, there are lots of artists and crafts to look at, but do not expect anything fancy, for many is a shocker...you'll see lots a crazy people doing wild things. Go during the day!!!!

The happiest place on earth!!! DISNEYLAND s about 30 minutes away, if you can, go on a week day, they close ealier but the crowds are gone and you'll be able to get in all the rides pretty week. Of course there is a lot more going on on weekends, shows, fireworks, parades so if possible get the two day pass, that way you can go to all the rides on a week day and save the shoes for the weekend (weekend schedule is Friday through Sunday) From the shows do not miss Fantasmic, you will sit around the lagoon in frontier land, the water will be shoot up into the sky and used as a projection screen, There you will see shorts of different movies, you will get to meet many characters (live) Mickey is the master of ceremony. There will be dancing, singing, magic tricks...etc, if possible see the night show because the colors and customes are double special at that time of the day.

Of course you can always go to the beach (20 minutes away) and visit the Queen Mary, to the desert (an hour away) and even the snow (hour and a half away)

Lakewood may not be the best city in the world, but is pretty, clean, safe and strategicaly located. don't miss it!!!
