Island in the Sky- The White Rim Road | Island in the Sky. The White Rim Road |
Wow. 100 miles long and occasionally flat. I was invited to join my friend Eva and her group who do this trail biannually. They make it a four day trip. I trained as much as I could at the local YMCA in the winter and ouside as soon as I could. It is hard in the oh-so-flat Midwest to prepare for a Canyon. I fared pretty well. But the first mile down had one member of the party departing in an air rescue helicopter. Heart attack. The scenery was amazing. The weather was in the 80's during the daytime and maybe low 50's at night. There were at least two occasions that I decided to hike-a-bike up, or just hike, or to ride in the support vehicle. That was at Murphy's Hogback one time. Yeah, that's as nasty as it sounds. I fell over after losing momentum on something smaller so..... On day three we hiked to an Anasazi fort (Fort Bottom Ruin) and to an old settlers cabin. Very Cool. You can see more info about this trial at the parks website http://www.nps.gov/cany/island/wrim.htm |
| | Why is it called White Rim? Ok, I peddled around that. I am sure my friends would be amazed that I did not fall in. ( I am clutzy) |
| | My campsite, day three I think this is at "Hardscrabble". If you look on the parks website and download the map for Island in the Sky you will see this site near the top left (10:00). The Fort Bottom Ruin is nearby. |
