Hola, fellow VT members and travel junkies, It's a fantastic world we live in....although, our world is becoming smaller in terms of technological linkage and advances, it still remains expansive, elemental and primitive in terms of spiritual development and higher consciousness. We can only move forward...
Now, perhaps a little anecdotal story of how I got bitten by the "travel bug" as an impressionable youngster. I remember tinkering with my Tío Albert(Uncle Al) in his garage one of those lazy, wet, rainy San Francisco afternoons. Tío left our project on the workbench to answer a phone call...I remember meandering around Tío's garage, admiring all his tools and toys, when I fixated on a world map my Auntie Betty had displayed on the garage wall. It charted her worldwide travels from her childhood, college and adult years. Auntie's crusty old Dutch sea captain papá, Mr. Klein, used to take his little tow-haired, sapphire-eyed princess with him on sea voyages. By the time Mme. Elizabeth Klein was a young, comely ingenue, she had a seasoned traveler's sophisticated view of the wide world... Auntie Betty had placed those miniscule, color-coded stickpins to feature each country she had visited on her globetrotting adventures...Exotic places like the Maluccas, the Fijis, French Polynesia, Nepal, Laos, Thailand...Bombay, Calcutta, Goa, Lahore, Luzón...French Guyana, Easter Island, the Amazon, Isla Margarita, Bélize, Costa Rica, the Panama Canal...the Pacific Northwest Passage, Ketchikan, Victoria Island...Ankara, Tangiers, the Petra, the Acropolis, the Sphinx...It fires a young child's vivid imagination and peaks the curiosity. I remember marveling at the extensiveness of this independent woman's sojourns. I had to ask Tía, "What are your favorite destinations, Auntie B?" She promptly responded, "That's easy...M & M---Malaysia and Montana." Auntie B carted out her treasured photo journals of magical Malaysia and majestic Montana to initiate this impressionable future traveler to the delights and splendors of world travel. To this day, I can't see a bag of Hershey's M&M's without associating it with the marvelous travel junkets of that extraordinary woman, my Aunt B. I still have a delicately carved Malay jungle fowl Aunt B gave me that magical, rainy afternoon. I sits in a prominent display case in my curio cabinet of world souvenirs. It's a little piece of Aunt B's restless soul...
