Chengdu we really liked. Of course the pollution was bad, as usual, but it seemed a bit less than the others (Xian was the worst, my eyes were crying the whole time). We stayed in this old area (see tips) which was so restful, and even though it felt like Japan a few decades ago, here it felt like a bygone Japan which I've never known, when neighbours knew and helped each other, when everybody didn't have running water but kids could play in the street. The rest of Chengdu was also nicer than the other cities we visited, perhaps a little bit less frantic, and we had fun in the pedestrian shopping area buying lots of tea.
