Cantonese food lives up to its reputation Cantonese food is the best known of Chinese cuisines worldwide. Most Chinese dishes we are familiar with are Cantonese (should I say from Guangzhou?). Although in the other cities we visited, we always had wonderful food too, still Guangzhou seems to lay such an emphasis on good fare and sharing it -- eat and enjoy. It's worth the trip all the way to China just to sample real Cantonese cuisine, a nice change from the usual Chicken with Cashew nuts and dumpy dum sum that we get in Europe. Eating in Guangzhou is not just about food, it's also about eating Chinese style -- forget about manners, slurp, make chewing noises, spit your bones out, clutter the table, talk as loud as you can, whatever, just enjoy the food and the company...Chinese food is NOT about eating what is only on your plate in a strict order like French food, each person ordering his or her exclusive dish. After all the Chinese invented those very pragmatic turning tables so that you can turn the dishes around and pass everything to your neighbour or better still, grab whatever you want without having to ask (wonderful invention). All dishes are shared and it's best to be at least 6 at the table. And even though this is common to all of China, it's still in Guangzhou that you see the epitome of the Chinese "art de manger". |
