Nicest place in Vietnam during our visit Hoi An we liked best of the cities we visited in Vietnam. Hanoi was a lot of fun, and we were probably too tired by the time we got to Saigon (and kind of traumatized by the museums there), Hue was OK but mainly heavy duty sightseeing and not so much "just being there", Nong Khai was supposed to be our beach time but we were there with a typhoon so that blew it although we had fun visiting the Champa temple, but Hoi An was a nice place to "just be". There isn't much to do or see, apart from the tailor shops where you end up having something made (we thought it was nice for light Vietnamese silk summer dresses, pretty patterns and colours, but not for formal wear, the workmanship isn't up to it, but we had clothes made in Saigon too and it was much the same, perhaps slightly cheaper in Saigon), and the beach where the sand is wonderful, like silk running between your toes (same kind of sand at Ko Phi Phi's Monkey Island in Thailand), and the Japanese bridge and some sights...but mainly, Hoi An was a really nice place to walk and eat and sit and watch the boats go by. It's said to be about the only place in Vietnam which is old and it makes you think how much of a pity that is. |
