Heimatmuseum at the Steintor and other Bernau, Germany Things to Do Tips

Located at the "Steintor", one of the 3 gates of Bernau, you find a very pretty little museum, the " Heimatmuseum ".
Visiting the museum you can get glimpse of life and war in Bernau in the last 500 years. You will find a collection of Medieval weapons at the armory. You can see textiles, furniture, arts and crafts as well as tools depicting the brewery tradition and everyday life in the city from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. You should not miss taking a look at the reconstructed "black kitchen", that gives you an idea how people cooked and prepared their food in the 17th, 18th and 19th century.

You can also climb up to the tower's roof, from where you have a great view on Bernau and the neighboring houses.

Tuesday to Friday 9 - 12 a.m. and 14 - 17 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday: 10 - 13 a.m. 14 - 17 p.m.

The now Protestant St.Marien-Kirche is a superb Gothic church, whose beginnings date back to the 13th century. It was consecrated in 1519, but the steeple, that you can see now, was added in the 1840ies.

Every year in September the "Festival Alter Musik" (festival of Early Music) takes place at St.Marien.
A guided tour is possible.

Every year in June thousands of visitors from Bernau and the surrounding region visit the Hussitenfest .
It commemorates the victory of the Bernau citizens over the Hussite army, who attacked the town in 1432.
Since 1832, when the festival was first celebrated, young and old have fun visiting the fair, and seing knights fighting against one another at a tournament at the Medieval market. Once every year there is a procession through the town centre.
