Everybody want to see the St. Peters while in Rome. And you really MUST see this! But it is a big difference in seeing the St.Perets and "feeling" the St. Peters. Go there before 8 AM (it opens at 7 AM), enter the bassilica while the morning sun is lightening up the altar, and you will feel it. If you don`t get the feeling then, wait there until a morning mass starts (between 8AM and 9AM), and you will. At this time you are almost alone in the bassilica. You can move around as you want and there are no guards telling you to move on, or to go in a spesific direction. One hour later the whole Church seems transformed into a big over crowded museum. The mystic feeling of the place is blown away by huge crowds og ppl., guides with sticks in the air trying to get their groups attention, trucks moving about on the floor moving materials around for some preperations. If you feel you havent seen enough in the 1-2 hours you have in the bassilica almost alone, its better to come back early the next day for the rest.

This is a great museum to take in on a trip to Rome. But don’t go there early! If you go there at 8:00 AM you will end up in a line for up to 2 hours (at 2:00 PM the line is about 15 mins) Many different guides will try to sell you a "jump in the line" for €30, with a 3 hour guided tour of the museum, and St. Peters. You can do this, but I recommend to get the "audioguides" you get for €6 in the museum. With these you have your own guide, can choose what way you want to see in the museum, and you can keep your own phase. The audioguides are really good. They give you a lot of info about all the most important things in the whole museum. Remember to bring some kind of ID card (besides your passport) to the museum if you want the audioguides. They keep the IDs until you give the guide back at the end of the visit.

Trastevere: When in Rome - do as the Romans

This is a part of Rome where you will find what you don’t find anywhere else. Regular Romans, living their regular life. Eating out with their friends and families, young boys playing football in front of the local church, or young Romans just hanging out by a fountain. As anywhere else in Rome the fountain they hang out by is old, the church they play by is ancient, and the food they eat is pizza, pasta and ice cream. Its just that in Trastevere its all laid back, its all done in a nice relaxed mood, and with all the people, shops and places to eat you can spend a whole day there just forgetting about Capitol, Forum, The Vatican and Pantheon. The shops you find here are not found anywhere else and the restaurants have prices Romans can live with. Ofcourse there are tourists in Trastevere as well, but since none of the “tourist magnets” of Rome is located in or very near this part of town you don’t find the guided tours trough the area. You really should spend a day, or at least a evening and night in this part of Rome. The nightlife is great.
