"A Walk on the Prague Side" Prague by Ekaterinburg

Not your average image of Prague.....

....... but it is in there somewhere. I loved this collage of images outside one of the many galleries in Mala Strana. For reasons best understood by myself I had no particular desire to go to Prague and when I ended up spending a night and morning there en route to Vienna, regarded it as an inconvenience more than a bonus. 'Shame, sacrelige ' I hear you say, 'this is one of the most beautiful cities in the world'. Of course it is but that is almost a problem. Prague's beauty has become like a cardboard cutout of itself and if I've looked at one person's photos of Prague over the years, I've looked at hundreds. I'd heard so many accounts of wall-to-wall crowds on Charles Bridge and Wenceslas Square not to mention the marauding pickpockets and aggressive taxi drivers just waitiing to rip you off that I'd decided, beautiful or not, it wasn't for me.

How did my prejudices hold up ?

In truth, not at all. I did not fall down in abject wonder and decide this place was nirvana but I found it equally impossible not to be charmed by it. A bright sunny morning, four hours to stroll through the Stare Mesto and Mala Strana, what could I not find charming? The crowds weren't too heavy, even on Old Town Square and I must confess that I thoroughly enjoyed Charles Bridge. The views up and down river were superb, the statues interesting and a saucy little breeze from the water made the temperature very comfortable. On this briefest of brief sorties, and without even looking, I kept coming on the most wonderful pieces of art, like these massive sculpted figures on one of the portals of Clam-Gallas Palace. What would one find if one were to actually seek out more ???

Over the Bridge and not Far Away

Over the bridge was Kampa park and Mala Strana. Sitting underneath Charles Bridge in the shade of a large drooping tree, I had to admit that my preconceptions of Prague were floundering. A little later crossing Na Kampe Square in search of John Lennon Wall, I was hooked. However, Malostranske Namesti changed my mind again. This square, like Wenceslas Square, I found utterly lacking in charm or atmosphere and chockfull of noisy trams and people.
So would I go back? Yes, if the opportunity arose but I don't think I would actively seek it out. Que sera, sera !

Katherine Ireally enjoyed this page on Prague. The frescos on Minute house are exquisite, and I would love to see the Lennon wall. I had similar nostalgic feeling when I saw Strawberry Fields in New York. The collage on overview is interesting. Thanks

Wonderful introduction. For a small page and short visit, you certainly have many very helpful and interesting tips. The hotel sounds terrific. John Lennon Wall tip says it all.

Excellent tips all the way around! I especially liked the relaxed atmosphere exuding from your Kampa Island tip and the John Lennon Wall was poignant for an old-timer like me! I'll have to remember your hotel too.

Lovely walk in Prague. The Kampa Island is just the place I'd like to find in a noisy city. And the Minute House looks great. Wish the doggy bags were as popular in Warsaw.
